Anyone visiting the Guatemalan highlands can delight in seeing the beautiful traje indigena (traditional Maya clothing). Some basic elements of the traditional dress are the huipil (blouse), corte/refago (skirt), and paz (belt). The styles, patterns and colours used to make these garments are unique to each village and the Maya women of the highlands proudly wear huipilies and cortes everyday.
Scrolling around on Pinterest one afternoon, I stumbled on a tutorial for Ice Dying. Have you heard of it?? I tried it for the first time last week and now it’s become my new favourite thing EVER. What I loved the most about ice dying is that unlike the traditional tie-dye method (tie & bind), it lets you achieve a stunning watercolour look. The process is so fun and easy and best of all, the ice does all the work for you so you don’t have to have any prior experience with fabric dying to create something gorgeous. I only used 4 powder dyes in my trial but as the ice melted and mixed the dyes, a whole spectrum of new colours emerged. The resulting pattern was a wonderful surprise and looks like a bright and colourful one-of-a-kind piece of art.

Confession time...I've never really been a giant fan of Halloween, least of all, decorating my home for it. There has been the odd year where I've gotten into the spirit and pulled a great costume together, but I've just never been able to get behind spending money on crappy, cheap plastic throw-away decor that's most likely to end up in the landfill.
This one’s for all the apartment renters out there…and for anyone else who’s been in misery over their shabby, outdated kitchen because they don’t have the time or budget to give it the proper overhaul that it needs. Let’s face it…when it comes to making big changes to your living space the struggle can be very real, especially if you’re a renter. But as you will see…making big, impactful changes doesn't mean that you have to break the bank, the secret is to get creative.
Devon, a self a proclaimed antique collector and thrifter, has a number of cherished pieces in her home which she inherited from her grandparents. In fact, she can place the first time she saw each item in her grandparent’s Muskoka home, where she spent so much of her time as a child. The pieces carry the same nostalgic words that Devon shared with me after her recent overnight trip to the historic Sherwood Inn on Lake Joseph, in Muskoka.
Finding affordable living in most big cities is difficult. Like me, you’re probably habituating a space that is reminiscent of its previous owners (as indicated by the outdated bedroom wall colour you’ve since painted over with Cloud White). Your home, like mine, shows real potential and it’s been screaming “fix me!” ever since you first moved in. But for most, dropping big bucks on a major renovation is simply not on the books - and for us renters, it’s probably not even an option.
